Ali currently runs the Reliable Computer Systems laboratory at the University of Waterloo. His research focus is on operating systems, storage and networking.

He completed his PhD at Stanford University in the Secure Computer Systems lab. He completed his masters and bachelors at MIT in Electrical Engineering. Prior to his PhD, he worked at VMware, Inc. for 5 years as the technical lead for the Storage vMotion and vMotion products and made a number of contributions to the ESX operating system.
