Daily Field Recording: 07 - Dew Pond
Published at : October 05, 2021
On a lovely walk over the downs we passed a bench by an old dew pond sunken in a shallow valley between the hills where we sat and listened. It was warm and the insects and birds were out chirping away.
The Daily Field Recordings are a series of 10 minute extracts that give the opportunity to listen to sounds I've found around me as I practice field recording. The extracts are presented directly from the recorder with no post-processing other than choosing the segment and setting the playback volume. My hope is that 10 minutes is just long enough to immerse into the soundscape as a listening exercise but short enough to listen to regularly.
I was inspired to do this series after going on a field recording course with Jez Riley French, which was a great experience! We did a lot of what Jez called "durational listening". My objective in this video series is to continue practicing durational listening often. While I would like to go out field recording every day, sometimes that just doesn't work out. So the "Daily" in the title of this series refers to how frequently I intend to publish a new recording, that is every day, Monday - Friday, at 08:00 UTC, for a while - until the idea has run its course.
I've been recording about 3 times a week. When I go on a recording walk I'll usually make several recordings each between 12 and 20 minutes long. I won't upload every recording I make and I'll publish them in more or less chronological order.
