Social Democratic Party (SPD) chancellor candidate Olaf Scholz said that the good exit poll results for his party show that voters want a political change in government, at the SPD's election night party in Berlin on Sunday.
“[It] is a mandate to ensure that everything that was discussed in this election and what we have proposed will also be implemented and we will politically stand up for it,” said Scholz.
He thanked party members for their support during the election campaign and vowed to show 'pragmatism, confidence, and unity.'
The party has worked for industrial modernisation, respect in society, and climate protection and will continue to fight for these goals, according to Scholz.
In the current projections by the ARD, the Union is at 24.5 percent behind the SPD, on 25.5 percent, and ahead of the Green Party on 13.8 percent.
SOT, Olaf Scholz, SPD chancellor candidate (German): "I am happy to see so many here and I am happy about the election result that the citizens of this country have chosen. You have decided that the social democratic party makes strong gains and that is a great success."
SOT, Olaf Scholz, SPD chancellor candidate (German): "But it is also certain that many citizens chose the SPD because they want a change in government and they want the next chancellor to be Olaf Scholz."
SOT, Olaf Scholz, SPD chancellor candidate (German): "We have worked to ensure that there is more respect in this society again, we have worked to ensure that industrial modernisation is successful in this country and we have worked to ensure that we put a stop to man-made climate change. Three major goals, which are now to be mastered in our country at the beginning of the twenties. Goals for which we have worked together. But that it was possible for the polls to develop so well that we now have the first projections showing the SPD receives a lot of support from the citizens, that is a mandate to ensure that everything that was discussed in this election and what we have proposed will also be implemented and we will politically stand up for it."
SOT, Olaf Scholz, SPD chancellor candidate (German): "Pragmatism, confidence and unity, we will show that in the near future, that is what matters and I am sure that the citizens will be happy about the decision they made when they voted for the SPD. That promise is valid."
SOT, Olaf Scholz, SPD chancellor candidate (German): "I would also like to say thank you, thank you to the citizens who gave us and me the vote, so that such an election result is possible. But as only one of the 400,000 members of the SPD, I want to thank all those who have advocated for this every day to make it possible."
SOT, Olaf Scholz, SPD chancellor candidate (German): "We are now waiting for the final election result, but then we will get down to work."
