Incumbent Chancellor Angela Merkel has warned of the 'seriousness' of the current COVID situation, as she met with the leaders of the new coalition.

"The drama is obvious, we are heading into a emergency situation that we have never had before in this country," stated her press spokesperson Steffen Seibert, during a press conference in Berlin, Wednesday.

"And now it must be a matter of doing what is necessary to slow down and break this fourth wave as quickly as possible," he added.

Seibert also touched the topic of a possible mandatory vaccination saying: "It is natural and understandable, in a situation of this emergency and that unfolds every day in its dramatic, to deliberate and debate about a mandatory vaccination. This is something that will probably be decided within the predicted two weeks by the leaders in the government, not by the current federal government."

Regarding the subject of the Nord Steam 2 gas pipe, Foreign Ministry spokesperson Andrea Sasse said "a constructive solution" has been found with the US.

"Since then we have been working intensively on the implementation of this joint declaration. And we are on close and regular coordination with the US government on different levels," she concluded.
Social Democrat's Olaf Scholz is expected to take over as chancellor before Christmas.

SOT, Steffen Seibert, Government spokesperson (German): "The Chancellor made clear at this meeting yesterday with the leaders of the 'traffic light' coalition, the exceptional seriousness of the situation, as she perceives it. The drama is obvious, we are heading for an emergency that we have never had before in this country. Hospitals are filling up fast. Free intensive care beds and available staff are becoming scarce. Patients with severe conditions must be moved further and further away; other important medical interventions must be postponed. At this point, we are in the fourth wave of the pandemic."

SOT, Steffen Seibert, Government spokesperson (German): "And now it must be a matter of doing what is necessary to slow down and break this fourth wave as quickly as possible. As I said, the chancellor has clearly explained the seriousness of the situation to the leaders of the future coalition."

SOT, Steffen Seibert, Government spokesperson (German): "It is also known that she was and is convinced, that now was not the right time to end the so-called epidemic state of national scope and not to extend it."

SOT, Steffen Seibert, Government spokesperson (German): "We are already now in a very dramatic situation and unfortunately we already know that it will become worse over the next days and it will come even more to an emergency situation as we never had."

SOT, Steffen Seibert, Government spokesperson (German): "And now with the new infection protection law that has been implemented, also in the states. That is surely correct and important. The vaccination moving forward, even if not with the pace that we must aim for. Nevertheless, there are experts who doubt if all of this measures are enough to slow down and break the wave in the near future."

SOT, Steffen Seibert, Government spokesperson (German): "It is natural and understandable, in a situation of this emergency and that unfolds every day in its dramatic, to deliberate and debate about a mandatory vaccination. This is something that will probably be decided within the predicted two weeks by the leaders in the government, not by the current federal government."

SOT, Andrea Sasse, Foreign Ministry spokesperson (German): "On July 21 we found a constructive solution for the issue Nord Stream Two, together with the Americans. Since then we have been working intensively on the implementation of this joint declaration. And we are on close and regular coordination with the US government on different levels."
